The Angkor period marks the apogee of the ancient Khmer civilization. Angkor Wat, one of the largest religious complexes in the world, was erected by Suryavarman II in the middle of the 12th century. Some decades later Jayavarman VII was ruling over territories encompassing present-day Thailand, Cambodia and a large part of Vietnam.
